How to Install Gate Hinges for Pool Gates with Safety & Security

Pool safety is a paramount concern, especially during the summer months. Recent studies have shown that an isolation fence with a self-closing gate or a self-latching pool gate could prevent up to 90% of toddler drownings. One standout solution in this space is Waterson’s self-closing heavy-duty gate hinges, known for their impeccable quality, durability, and easy-to-adjust features. And here is the guidance for installing our gate hinges.

How to Install Gate Hinges for Pool Gates

Waterson pool gate hinges install as easily as standard ones. You can use a complete Waterson set: top & bottom = mechanism hinges, middle = non-mechanism. Our tools include 3 mm & 5 mm hex, driver, shims, level. Here is a Step-by-step installation:

  1. Replace the middle hinge (non-mechanism).
Remove the existing center hinge. Install the Waterson non-mechanism hinge with supplied screws. Verify reveal and free swing.
  2. Zero the mechanism hinges.
On the bench, set S (spring) to 0 on both mechanism hinges (no preload).
  3. Install the top mechanism hinge.
Mount at the top with S = 0. Check for smooth, unobstructed swing.
  4. Install the bottom mechanism hinge.
Repeat for the bottom position—also S = 0. Confirm alignment and free movement.
  5. Set baseline preload.
Turn S on both mechanism hinges to #3 (even, matching turns). This is your safe starting tension.
  6. Run the initial test sweep.
Open and release from 20°, 60°, and 90°. Observe sweep, latch, and any rebound; note what needs fine-tuning.

Waterson’s 3-hinge set should be installed per the stickers (top, middle, bottom). Trace the hinge, cut the mortise, and align the hinge pin flush with the door frame.

How Many Self Closing Hinges Do You Install on The Pool Gate

Typically, a gate requires two self-closing hinges for effective operation. However, for larger and heavier gates, three hinges may be necessary to provide extra support and maintain proper function. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific gate and hinge model. For Waterson self-closing pool gate hinges, the standard recommendation is to install two hinges for doors or gates up to 60″ high and three hinges for doors or gates between 60″and 90″ high. The number can vary based on the weight and size of the door or gate.

How to Adjust Pool Gate Hinges

Unlike most spring hinges, Waterson’s VISUAL numerical tension panel and patented speed control unit make the adjustment process much more assured and precise. Waterson pool gate hinges are as simple as a standard pool gate hinge installation. Just measure the opening, mark the spots with a pencil, drill the holes, and screw them onto the gates or posts.

How to Tighten Pool Gate Hinges

Tightening a pool gate hinge typically involves the following steps:

Step 1: Locate the tension adjustment mechanism. This is usually a screw or a set of screws on the hinge.

Step 2: Determine the direction to turn: Typically, turning the screw clockwise tightens the hinge, increasing the tension and making the gate close more firmly. Turning it counterclockwise loosens the hinge, decreasing the tension.

Step 3: Make the adjustment: Using a screwdriver or an allen wrench, turn the screw slightly in the desired direction. Be careful not to over-tighten, as this can damage the hinge.

Step 4:Test the gate: After making the adjustment, open and close the gate to test the new tension. If the gate still doesn’t close firmly enough, or if it’s now too hard to open, adjust the tension again.

Negative Swing Setup

Negative degree swing is important to ensure effective latching, especially in daycare centers, schools, and commercial swimming pools where safety is essential.  The Waterson spring-loaded gate hinge closing degree can easily be adjusted by the installed set screw between a functional range of -4d – 0d, which guarantees snap closing, security, and peace of mind.

Waterson Weatherproof Self Closing Hinges for Pool Gate

Waterson Self Closing Gate Hinges combine an overhead hinge into one attractive component with optional hold-open and door stop features. These gate hinges are ideal for commercial openings, gates, and glass doors. The hinges are easily installed and adjusted to comply with ADA & ICC A117.1 requirements for opening force and to assure quiet, secure closing.
