The answer really depends on how you define “mix.” If you’re thinking of combining Waterson hinges directly with other brands in the same hinge line-up, then no — it’s not recommended. But if you mean adding supplemental hardware to support certain conditions, then yes, that can work.

However, what are the reasons? Let’s break it down clearly.

Waterson hinges are engineered as a system, not standalone parts. Mixing them with unrelated hardware leads to hinge compatibility issues that compromise performance. • The S setting adjusts tension — the force that brings the door closed.
• The SA hinges control the swing speed — how fast the door returns.

If you remove any one of these or swap the bottom SA1 with a generic hinge, the closing mechanism won’t function the way it should. You might still get some movement, but it won’t be controlled, and over time, the unbalanced setup could put unnecessary stress on the door or hinge body.

One of our recent clients installed Waterson hinges on a 260 lbs pool gate and added a Lockey hydraulic gate closer at the top of the frame. When we followed up, he explained:

“What you’re referring to is the Lockey TB200 hydraulic gate closure. We install these in tandem with self-closing hinges because it helps distribute the weight between the hinges and the closer for a smooth close.”

In this case, the added hardware wasn’t a replacement — it worked in harmony with the Waterson hinge system. Although Waterson hinges can work well themselves with this application or other extreme outdoor conditions, the supplemental support can ensure longevity and better control.
