Hinge Compatibility: Can Waterson Hinges Go with Other Door Hardwares

We get this question quite often, especially when it comes to hinge compatibility between Waterson and other brands. The answer really depends on how you define “mix.” If you’re thinking of combining Waterson hinges directly with other brands in the same hinge line-up, then no — it’s not recommended. But if you mean adding supplemental hardware to support certain conditions, then yes, that can work.

However, what are the reasons? Let’s break it down clearly.

Why Hinge Compatibility Matters in Door Systems

Waterson hinges are engineered as a system, not standalone parts. Mixing them with unrelated hardware leads to hinge compatibility issues that compromise performance. Each hinge in the set contributes to a specific function, and they’re meant to work in sync. For example, in a typical SA.SA.SA1 configuration:

  • The S setting adjusts tension — the force that brings the door closed.
  • The SA hinges control the swing speed — how fast the door returns.
  • The SA1 hinge fine-tunes the latch speed — slowing the door down just before it closes

If you remove any one of these or swap the bottom SA1 with a generic hinge, the closing mechanism won’t function the way it should. You might still get some movement, but it won’t be controlled, and over time, the unbalanced setup could put unnecessary stress on the door or hinge body.

In other words, mixing a Waterson hinge with something else in the same lineup breaks the intended functionality. The result isn’t just underperformance — it’s potential damage.

Exceptional Cases When Other Hardware Can Support (Not Replace)

There are some cases where an additional device is used alongside Waterson hinges — not in place of them — and the outcome is excellent.

One of our recent clients installed Waterson hinges on a 260 lbs pool gate and added a Lockey hydraulic gate closer at the top of the frame. When we followed up, he explained:

“What you’re referring to is the Lockey TB200 hydraulic gate closure. We install these in tandem with self-closing hinges because it helps distribute the weight between the hinges and the closer for a smooth close.”

In this case, the added hardware wasn’t a replacement — it worked in harmony with the Waterson hinge system. Although Waterson hinges can work well themselves with this application or other extreme outdoor conditions, the supplemental support can ensure longevity and better control. So yes, when done thoughtfully, adding another component can enhance the door’s performance — as long as hinge compatibility is maintained.

What If I Just Want to Replace One Hinge?

If you’re swapping in just one mechanical hinge from our line (like SA or SA1) without the rest of the system, the results might not meet your expectations. The mechanism won’t operate as intended, and you may lose the soft or self-closing features altogether.

For this reason, we always recommend reaching out to us directly if you’re unsure. A quick consultation can save you from an ineffective setup — or worse, a costly repair down the line.

Our Recent Spring Loaded Hinges Applications

Our self-closing hinges include a built-in numerical panel for easy tension adjustment.

– Just use the included 5mm hex wrench to turn the dial from “N” up to 5 for stronger closing force.
– Turning back down decreases tension.
– Please avoid turning directly between “N” and “7” as this may damage the hinge.

For your convenience, each hinge set includes all necessary installation hardware and adjustment tools, including the hex wrench. Read Waterson Hinge Tension Adjustment here for your information.

You can use door stops to prevent damage from doors opening too far—especially in tight spaces or near walls. Waterson’s door stop on hinge limits swing to 90° or 120°, meeting ADA 404.2.3 clear width requirements without needing wall-mounted stops.

No, Waterson hinges only for side-swing horizontal doors. They are not compatible with upward or downward lift-up doors due to gravity-dependent mechanisms.
