“We had a glass door installed with self-closing hinges about 3 1/2 years ago. The door at first banged so hard on closing it vibrated the entire front desk area of our dental clinic. With adjustments it now no longer closes fully and often gets stuck in the open position. Can you assist me in a solution”

A dental clinic reached out to us about their self-closing glass door. When first installed, the door slammed so hard and rattled the entire front desk. Now, after several adjustments, it often sticks open and fails to close fully.

Commercial glass doors depend heavily on precise hinge tension and alignment. If your door isn’t closing as it should, here’s how to adjust your glass door hinges for smoother, safer performance.

Step 1: Know Your Hinge Model

Please note that Waterson heavy duty spring loaded glass door hinges series are K51GM, GG, GWL, and among other types . However, the adjustment process remains consistent and is categorized based on codes B and D, built on hydraulic hybrid for soft and smooth closing.

Step 2: Read the Adjustment Instructions

Waterson commercial self closing glass door hinges are easily adjustable and re-adjustable. On the top and bottom of Waterson hinges, there are the top tension setting and bottom speed setting respectively. Besides, all the needed tools for adjustment are also included in the hinge set box. Please based on the Adjustment Instructions of your hinge set to adjust these door hinges properly.

For example:
Self Closing Glass Door Hinges K51GM-B3 is a set of 3 hinges/doors (SA.HS.SA1). Therefore, you should go to Set B3 (SA.HS.SA1) – B.3 How To Adjust, or watch the Youtube video for Set B3 (SA.HS.SA1) for more information.

Step 3: Re-check the Glass Door Hinges Movement

After adjusting, swing the glass door several times to check for smooth self closing and proper alignment. Re-adjust if needed.

As a general rule you will want to use 1 hinge per every 30 inches of door, so:
2 hinge position on doors up to 60 inches
3 hinge position on 60-90 inches doors
4 hinge position on 90-120 inches doors
However this vary based on the hinges brand. Besides, door weight is also a factor. Three Waterson hinges can bear over 260 lbs, and four hinges up to 440 lbs.
