The widely referenced ANSI/BHMA A156.17 standard for self-closing hinges and pivots, for example, specifies testing with three hinges. That works well for typical commercial doors. But what happens when your project calls for an oversized door — say, 4 feet wide, 8 feet tall, weighing over 300 pounds — and that door also needs to be fire-rated?
That’s exactly the gray area Waterson decided to address head-on.

But First, What ANSI/BHMA A156.17 Grade 1 Actually Means
ANSI/BHMA A156.17 is the industry standard for self-closing hinges and pivots. Grade 1 is the highest performance classification, designed for the most demanding commercial and institutional applications. To achieve it, a hinge must pass a rigorous battery of tests, including:
- 1,000,000-Cycle Endurance: Simulate years of heavy daily use
- Closing Force: Confirm the door self-closes reliably every time
- Latch Test (Single-Acting Doors): Verify proper latching under real conditions
- Static Load: Prove the hinge holds under sustained weight and pressure
- Vertical & Lateral Wear: Check that the hinge stays stable and precise over time
Waterson’s Series K51M-450 spring-loaded door hinges passed all five of these tests, as verified by UL Solutions (UL Taiwan Co., Ltd.) in a test conducted from February to May 2024
Results
| Clause | Description | Grade | Test result |

Beyond the Standard: The 4-Hinge, 8-Foot Door Test
The ANSI/BHMA A156.17 standard only covers 3-hinge doors up to 7 ft. Meanwhile, most manufacturers stop there, leaving oversized fire doors in a gray area.
NFPA 80 addresses this gap with one line: consult the manufacturer.
However, Waterson did what most don’t, and brought UL Solutions in to verify every result.
| Door Size | Weight | Higes Tested | Verified by | Outcome |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 ft × 8 ft | 264.6 lb (120 kg) | 4 (DS, HS, SA, SA1) | UL Solutions | All Compliant |
Usually, that “consult the manufacturer” clause goes unanswered. In this case, Waterson has the documented data to back it up.
