“I have 4 doors all adjusted a little different but all acting the same not wanting to close fully unless opened to a full 90 degree, or I can get them to close but slam when opened to 90 degrees. Can you help on how to adjust?”

We recently heard from a client who installed Waterson heavy duty spring door hinges on multiple doors. Despite adjusting each hinge differently, they all shared the same problem: either the doors wouldn’t close fully unless opened to a full 90°, or they closed too forcefully and slammed shut.

Spring hinges are designed for controlled self-closing, but their performance depends heavily on proper tension and alignment. Then how to adjust spring door hinges? If you’re facing similar issues, here’s a step-by-step guide to fine-tuning your spring door hinges for smoother, safer operation.

Step 1: Know Your Hinge Model

Please note that Waterson heavy duty spring loaded door hinges series is K51M, which vary in sizes such as 4×4, 4.5×4.5, 5×5, 6×6, and more. However, the adjustment process remains consistent and is categorized based on codes A, B, C, and D.

Step 2: Read the Adjustment Instructions

Waterson self closing door hinges are easily adjustable and re-adjustable. On the top and bottom of Waterson hinges, there are the top tension setting and bottom speed setting respectively. Besides, all the needed tools for adjustment are also included in the hinge set box. Please based on the Adjustment Instructions of your hinge set to adjust these door hinges properly.

For example:
Stainless Steel Self Closing Door Hinges K51M-450-A3 is a set of 3 hinges/doors (SA.SA.SA1), in 4.5 inch size. Therefore, you should go to Set A3 (SA.SA.SA1) – A.3 How To Adjust, or watch the Youtube video for Set A3 (SA.SA.SA1) for more information.

Step 3: Re-check the Spring Door Hinges Movement

After adjusting, swing the door several times to check for smooth self closing and proper alignment. Re-adjust if needed.

As a general rule you will want to use 1 hinge per every 30 inches of door, so:
2 hinge position on doors up to 60 inches
3 hinge position on 60-90 inches doors
4 hinge position on 90-120 inches doors
However this vary based on the hinges brand. Besides, door weight is also a factor. Three Waterson hinges can bear over 260 lbs, and four hinges up to 440 lbs.
