Project Description

Built in 1908, the Walt Whitman Branch of Brooklyn Public Library is a Classical Revival landmark in Fort Greene that has anchored its community for over a century. The branch’s exterior steel gates, fabricated by USW, required a self-closing hinge solution that would perform reliably outdoors without protruding overhead closer arms. Each gate was specified with 4.5 x 4.5 inch heavy-duty hinges in a Satin Stainless Steel (US32D) finish, engineered to withstand weather exposure while meeting ADA requirements for closing speed and force.

When AAA Hardware short-shipped eight of the originally specified K51MP-450-A4 hinges, Waterson approved substituting two sets of K51MP-450-A2 per gate, confirming the pairing delivered the same self-closing function and matched the 4.5 inch US32D specification exactly. The K51MP hinges work like a hydraulic door closer without extrusive arms, using an adjustable numerical panel to fine-tune closing speed and force to each gate’s weight and exposure. corrosion-resistant stainless steel with weather-resistant caps, they keep the gates closing securely and quietly outdoors while preserving the clean, hardware-forward look the branch’s exterior called for
