How Many Self Closing Hinges Per Door? The NFPA 80 Rule vs. Waterson Sets for Fire & Arched Doors

“We have a large project and need 52 hinges total. Should I go with 3 or 4 hinges per door?”

Well, the answer depends on two things: door height and door weight. Neither one alone is enough to determine the right hinge count. So, what NFPA 80 truly requires, how door weight factors in, and when you find the right spring hinge that fits into the spec, can you make the right call before the hardware schedule is finalized?

Step 1: How Many Hinges? Door Height Decides

Waterson follows the industry standard for hinge count. NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, requires two hinges on doors up to 60 inches tall, plus one more hinge for each additional 30 inches of height or fraction thereof. The rule is written for fire-rated doors, but door and hardware manufacturers apply the same count to all swinging doors (summary of the NFPA 80 hinge rules, VT Industries technical bulletin).

Height only sets the count. A light 7 ft interior door and a heavy 7 ft solid-core door both get three hinges, even though they need very different closing force. Step 2 handles that difference.

Step 2: Which Hinges? Door Weight Decides

With conventional spring hinges, every hinge is identical, so counting hinges is counting closing force. A Waterson set works differently. Each hinge model does one job, and only models with an S in the code carry a spring and add closing force. The set code adds the function family (A mechanical, B hydraulic hybrid, C mechanical with hold open, D hydraulic with hold open) and the hinge count, so A3 is a mechanical set of three.

So once Step 1 gives you the hinge count, count the springs, not the hinges. Going from A2 to A4 doubles the hinge count but multiplies the spring force by 2.5, because the fourth position is a DS with two springs.

The same logic works in reverse. Set B3 (DS + HA + SA) and set A3 (SA + SA + SA1) both use three hinges and three spring units. B3 gives up one spring for HA hydraulic damping, then uses the DS to win that force back: same count, same force, a softer close.

Why the weight is a range. Closing force also depends on spring tension, which you set in the field on each spring hinge’s numbered panel. Setting it beyond 5 can shorten spring life, so the top of a range shows what a set can do, and the middle is where it performs best long term. If your door is close to a set’s upper limit, we recommend adding one more hinge to ensure long-term durability.

Can You Mix Waterson Hinges with Other Brands?

We do not recommend it.

Waterson hinges have a larger barrel than standard hinges, so mixing them on one door makes it hard to keep every hinge on the same pivot axis. Each Waterson set is also engineered and tested as a whole for a specific height and weight range. Check Waterson Hinge Compatibility.

In practice, some customers save cost on light doors by using two Waterson hinges at the top and bottom and a regular hinge in the middle, and still get the same closing performance. Whether it works depends on the installer’s skill in aligning the pivot axis. Please note that installing fewer Waterson hinges than specified voids the Waterson warranty, which states 10 years for mechanical and 3 years for hydraulic.

How Many Waterson Hinges Does a Fire Door Need?

NFPA 80 requires at least two listed spring hinges per fire door leaf, so the most common setup on light fire doors is two spring hinges plus one regular hinge. Customers often ask whether they can do the same with two Waterson hinges. Our answer depends on where the fire door is used, and on a 7 ft door, installing only two Waterson hinges voids the Waterson warranty in every case.

Commercial fire doors protect people who rely on them to close every time, so we only recommend the full three-hinge set. A dormitory is a residential building, but it carries the same life-safety exposure as a commercial one, so the same rule applies. For a house-to-garage door, which is usually 20-minute rated, two Waterson hinges plus one regular hinge can reliably close and latch the door, with the warranty note above still in effect.

To keep cost down on these doors, Waterson also offers a combination of two self-closing hinges plus one Waterson NF hinge. NF is a no-function hinge from the same Waterson series, so it matches the barrel of the two self-closing hinges and makes the pivot axis easier to align than a generic hinge.

How Many Hinges Does an 8 ft Fire Door Need?

A standard 8 ft door takes four Waterson hinges, typically the A4 set. The challenge on fire doors is testing: ANSI/BHMA A156.17, the standard NFPA 80 references for self-closing hinges, only covers 7 ft doors with three hinges, and for 8 ft doors NFPA 80 sends specifiers to the manufacturer. Most self-closing hinges on the market are tested only to 7 ft.

How Many Hinges Does an Arched Door Need?

Count hinges by the straight hinge edge, but size the set for the full door. The arch can rise well above that edge, so a door that is 9 or 10 ft at its peak may only have about 8 ft of straight stile where hinges can go. The door is still taller and heavier than a standard 8 ft leaf, and the extra weight sits above the top hinge.
