Project Description

Founded in 2022 in North Hatley, Solstice Sauna is a Nordic-style social sauna company now opening a seven-barge floating complex with four social saunas in the Bassin Louise at the Port of Québec.

The project required self-closing hardware for 8 solid wood-clad doors (6 exterior and 2 interior sauna doors), ranging from 32″ to 36″ wide and 80″ to 94″ tall, 1-3/4″ thick, and weighing up to around 130 lb, with all 25 hinges in 316 marine-grade stainless steel to withstand constant humidity, sauna heat, and year-round waterfront exposure through Québec winters. The tallest exterior door, at 36″ x 94″, needed a four-hinge setup for extra support, while every door had to close on its own reliably and stay open when needed for guest traffic and cleaning.

Waterson Marine Grade Hinges Solution

Waterson recommended the mechanical K51M-400-C3 in 316 marine-grade stainless steel for seven of the doors, including both interior sauna doors, and the four-hinge SS316 K51M-400-C4 for the tall 36″ x 94″ exterior door. The mechanical design has no hydraulic fluid inside, so it performs consistently through sauna heat and freezing winters, while adjustable closing speed and force, plus a 90° hold-open, let staff fine-tune each door and keep it open during busy periods or cleaning. Every Waterson hinge is fully concealed when closed; Solstice Sauna gets durable, rust-resistant door control without bulky overhead closers.
