Project Description
Are 316 stainless steel hinges good for coastal and saltwater gates? Yes. 316 marine grade stainless steel adds molybdenum for strong resistance to chloride corrosion from salt air and washdown, which makes it the preferred grade for exterior gate hardware near the coast.
Recently, HCH approached Waterson as a potential manufacturer for a range of single gates, including auto-close, electronic-latch, and electronic-latch auto-close configurations. The project called for marine grade 316 stainless steel hinges that could survive a corrosive coastal environment while keeping a clean, architectural look.

Why SS316 But Not SS304?
In coastal and waterfront settings, gate hardware faces a constant attack that inland hardware never sees. Salt-laden air, sea spray, and humidity carry chlorides that break down the protective layer on ordinary metals, leading to pitting, staining, and eventually seized or failing hinges. This is why “marine grade” is not just a label. It describes hardware built to keep working where chloride exposure is a daily condition rather than an occasional one.
Marine grade 316 stainless steel meets that demand because of one key ingredient: molybdenum. This element strengthens the alloy’s resistance to chloride corrosion far beyond standard 304 stainless steel, which is why 316 is the preferred choice for offshore, marine, poolside, and washdown environments. For a self-closing gate near the coast, that means a hinge that holds its finish, resists pitting, and keeps closing reliably year after year with only routine rinsing and light maintenance.

Marine SS316 Strength With an Architectural Finish
316 stainless steel hinges effortlessly meet specified material standards and weight-loading requirements. With a weight capacity of up to 150 lbs per 2 hinges, our durable and sturdy hinges are built to withstand heavy loads. Furthermore, Waterson hinges boast a range of elegantly refined finishes, including the distinguished Flat Black Finish (U19) chosen by HCH for its stylish appeal.
Meeting a Non-Standard Spec: Self-Close, Hold-Open, or Both
Although the original specification requested the removal of the self-closing mechanism, we have considered other outstanding functions that our hinges can offer. For instance, our high-grade 316 stainless steel materials are corrosion-resistant and require low maintenance. While Waterson heavy duty exterior hinges offer a self-closing mechanism by default, the speed control can be easily adjusted to tailor the door’s behavior, allowing it to function as either a hold-open or a self-closing unit based on specific needs.

Key Benefits of Marine Grade Stainless Steel
- Superior corrosion resistance
- Chlorine resistance
- Offshore, marine & washdown applications
- Corners: Square is standard, 1/4 or 5/8″ radii are options.
- Door Stops: Optional.
- Weather-Resistant Cap: Optional.

316 stainless steel is more expensive than 304 due to the addition of molybdenum, which enhances corrosion resistance in chloride-containing environments. The increased cost is mainly due to the production process and the added value of molybdenum.
