For a Canadian entrance, the right commercial door hinges are the ones that still pass the force gauge, still latch, and still look clean after several winters of wind and heavy traffic. So how do you choose the hinge that fits this application?
Can a Self-Closing Hinge Stay Under 38 N and Still Latch When Stack Effect Fights the Door?
On a barrier-free path, the closer has to let an exterior door open at no more than 38 N and an interior door at no more than 22 N (NBC 2015 Article 3.8.3.6, and Article 3.8.3.3 in the Ontario Building Code). In a mid-rise or high-rise, stack effect pushes on the ground-floor entrance in winter. A closer tuned in July leaves the door floating off the strike in January, and a closer tuned in January fails the gauge in spring.
With a surface closer, the spring and valve sit in one box, and most service techs adjust by feel. How Many Hinges Does a 250 lb, 8-Foot Entrance Leaf Actually Need?

- Up to 8’0″ x 4’0″ and 330 lbs: four hinges per leaf (A4 mechanical or B4 hydraulic hybrid). A 250 lb, 8-foot leaf needs four hinges, not three.
- 8’0″ with hold-open (C4 or D4): rated to 260 lbs, so check leaf weight before adding hold-open to a tall door.
- Leaf thickness: 4-1/2″ x 4-1/2″ (K51M-450) for 1-3/4″ doors, the 5″ x 5″ heavy duty K51M-500D at 0.190″ gauge for 1-3/4″ to 2-1/4″ leaves, and 6″ x 6″ heavy duty door hinges for 2-1/4″ and up.
- Anti-slam: the hydraulic hybrid models (B and D) control the closing speed, so a heavy leaf closes onto the strike without impact on the frame or glazing.

What Stops Wind From Throwing a Heavy Leaf Past the Frame?
On the Prairies and along the coasts, a gust catching a heavy door at 90 degrees puts the full load on the top hinge and the frame anchors. Floor stops are not ideal at an entrance either, because they catch plow blades, collect ice, and become a trip hazard on the accessible route.
