St. Mary’s Episcopal Church | Wayne, PA
Project Description
St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Wayne, Pennsylvania, is a stone church completed in 1889, featuring a round stair tower and a great stone belfry designed by the Wilson Brothers. The church’s Property Committee wanted to remove an old, problematic surface-mounted closer on one of its exterior entry doors and replace it with a cleaner, integrated closing solution. The single stained-wood door measures 84.5″ high × 48″ wide × 2.25″ thick and weighs under 210 lb, and the committee required a flat black finish with no additional door stops added to the opening.
Waterson recommended a set of three 5″ × 5″ mechanical self closing door hinges, which replace the function of the separate closer while keeping the door’s historic appearance free of bulky overhead hardware. The two SA hinges at the top and middle positions provide adjustable spring tension and swing speed, while the SA1 hinge at the bottom adds adjustable latch speed so the heavy 48″ door closes and latches reliably. Because the closing force is shared across three hinges in a matte flat black finish, the solution blends into the stained wood and works with the church’s existing heavy-duty door stop.
