“Okay, so I have a couple of gates that we’re getting these hinges for. There were a couple of the four-packs that I needed to pick up, and I saw the two-packs (A2) with four-pack (A4). I’m curious what the difference would be between ordering four of the two-packs (4 sets x A2) versus two of the four-packs (2 sets x A4).”

In the inquiry, we could closely see four separate questions folded into one:

  • What is physically inside a two-pack versus a four-pack, and are they the same hinge?
  • How many hinges does the gate actually carry, and in which positions?
  • Do four two-packs add up to the same working gate as two four-packs?
  • Once installed, will the set actually self-close, control speed, and latch on its own?

Let’s walk through them in order, then look at where Waterson fits.

Waterson Self Closing Gate Hinges A2 vs A4

What Is Actually Inside a Two-Pack (K51M-A2) Versus a Four-Pack (K51M-A4)?

On a Waterson gate set, the hinges are not interchangeable by count. Each hinge carries a specific mechanism, and the code stamped on it tells you which one:

  • S (Spring): provides the self-closing force. Tension is set on the numerical panel, N, 0, 1 and upward.
  • A (Swing Speed): controls the door speed through the wide part of the arc, roughly 90 degrees down to 20 degrees. This mechanism lives on the SA (and HA) hinge bottom.
  • A1 (Latch Speed): controls the final 20 degrees, the part that decides whether the gate latches positively or stalls an inch short. This lives on the SA1 hinge bottom.
  • DS (Double S): a double-spring hinge that adds tension for a heavier leaf and spreads that load across the set.

So a two-pack and a four-pack are not two quantities of one part. They are two different engineered layouts. A typical two-pack is a spring pair, for example an SA and an SA1, sized for a lighter gate. A four-pack, for example DS, SA, SA, SA1, is a complete set built to carry the spring load and the speed control across the full height of the leaf. Same family of hinge, different job assigned to each unit in the box.

How Many Hinges Does Your Gate Carry, and In Which Positions?

Start with the leaf, because weight and height drive the count. The working rule is one hinge for roughly every 30 inches of leaf height: a gate up to about 60 inches wants two hinges, a taller or heavier gate wants three or more. A wind-loaded exterior gate almost always sits at the higher end of that range.

Model Hinges Configuration Max Door Size Max Weight
K51M-450-A2 2 SA + SA1 3′ × 6′ 150 lbs
K51M-450-A4 4 DS + SA + SA + SA1 4′ × 8′ 330 lbs

But count alone still does not specify the gate. Position and hinge function matter just as much:

  • The spring (S) has to be present in enough units to actually pull the gate shut against its own weight and any wind.
  • The swing-speed hinge (SA) and the latch-speed hinge (SA1) provide different stages of closing control, allowing the gate’s movement and final latch action to be adjusted independently.
  • A DS hinge is added in heavier configurations, such as the K51M-450-A4, to provide the additional spring force needed for the heavier leaf.

That is why moving from an A2 to an A4 configuration is not simply adding two identical hinges. The functional arrangement changes from SA + SA1 to DS + SA + SA + SA1 to match the increased size and weight of the opening.

Do Four Two-Packs Add Up to the Same Gate as Two Four-Packs?

The overall performance of two A2 sets won’t be significantly different from a single A4 set. Both self-close well and use a similar adjustment mechanism, so day to day the gate behaves much the same.

That said, although two A2 sets give you more spring hinges and can therefore carry a heavier leaf, they still won’t match the A4 layout. This is because the A4 gets extra tension from the DS (double-spring) hinge, which spreads the load evenly across every hinge and improves long-term durability. However, the DS itself isn’t the determining factor in self-closing performance, it mainly protects the set over time.

In short: two A2 sets will close and function reliably, but the A4 configuration is better balanced for a heavy gate and will hold up better over the life of the opening.

Where Waterson Stainless Steel Self Closing Gate Hinges Fit Your Gate

Waterson builds a full-mortise, concealed, stainless closer hinge that self-closes, controls speed, holds open, and stops the gate, all inside the hinge and all field-adjustable. For the exterior gate in our customer’s inquiry, these are the specifications that matter.

Feature Specification What it does on a gate
Stainless Steel Type 304 standard, 316 and 316L marine grade optional Resists corrosion on coastal, humid, and salt-exposed gates
Self-Closing (S) Built-in adjustable spring, set on the numerical panel Pulls the gate shut with no separate overhead closer
Swing Speed (A) Field-set 90 to 20 degrees on the SA hinge bottom Controls the swing so the gate does not race or stall
Latch Speed (A1) Field-set final 20 degrees on the SA1 hinge bottom Drives a clean, positive latch every time
Double Spring (DS) Added tension for heavier leaves Spreads spring load across the set for longer life
Heavy Duty Up to 330 lb, leaves to 4 by 8 ft, add hinges to scale Carries a heavy exterior leaf without sag
Hold Open Field set near 90 degrees, optional One set covers self-closing and hold-open gates
Anti-Slam Hydraulic control on the last degrees of travel Protects the frame, latch, and any glass panel
Weatherproof Engineered for all-weather exterior exposure Holds up to wind, rain, and UV at the threshold
Fire Rated UL certified to 3 hours, meets NFPA 80 Pedigree for rated openings where a gate ties into one
Warranty 10-year product warranty Priced for the life of the opening, not the season

Once installed, either configuration will self-close, control swing and latch speed, and latch on its own, since every set already includes the SA and SA1 hinges that manage those stages.

Order by Gate, Not by Hinge Count

Four two-packs and two four-packs put the same number of hinges in the box, but they do not build the same gate. An A2 set is an SA and SA1 pair engineered for a gate up to 3′ by 6′ and 150 lb, while an A4 set adds a DS double-spring hinge and a second SA to carry a leaf up to 4′ by 8′ and 330 lb with the load spread evenly across the set. If each gate is light enough for an A2, two-packs are the right fit. If the gates are tall, heavy, or wind-loaded, one A4 per gate gives you the balanced layout that keeps the leaf aligned and latching for the life of the opening.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each code tells you which job that hinge does in the set. S is the spring that provides self-closing force, A controls the swing speed from about 90 to 20 degrees, and A1 controls the latch speed through the final 20 degrees. DS is a double-spring hinge that adds closing force for heavier leaves and spreads the load across the set. Check the code stamped on each hinge before installing so every unit goes where it belongs.
Start with the gate’s size and weight. A two-hinge A2 set covers gates up to 3′ by 6′ and 150 lb, while a four-hinge A4 set covers gates up to 4′ by 8′ and 330 lb. If your gate is near the upper limit, exposed to strong wind, or between sizes, choose the larger set or send us the gate details for a recommendation.
Yes, Waterson sets can be scaled by adding hinges, but the added units should match the function the gate needs, such as a DS hinge for extra spring force, rather than simply duplicating what is already installed. Contact our team with the gate’s weight and the codes on your current hinges, and we will confirm which units to add.
Not every hinge needs the same adjustment. Set the spring tension first on the numerical panel, then fine-tune the swing speed on the SA hinge and the latch speed on the SA1 hinge until the gate closes smoothly and latches every time. See our adjustment guide for step-by-step instructions.
Yes. The K51M-450 A2 and A4 sets use the same 4.5″ by 4.5″ hinge size, so the mortise and screw layout are the same. The difference is how many hinges the gate carries and which function each one performs, not the hinge footprint itself.
