Can Waterson Self Closing Gate Hinges Work on a Chain Link Fence

“Hi, we’re closing out a commercial lot and the spec calls for self closing hinges on the entry gates. These are customized metal gates: a welded 2×2 steel frame with chain-link infill, 4′-0″ wide by 3′-6″ tall, around 200 lbs each. Why Won’t Waterson Hinges Clamp Onto A Round Chain Link Gate Post?

Chain link swing gates hang on round tubular posts, usually 2-3/8 in. to 4 in. OD terminal posts set in concrete. There is no flat face and no square section anywhere on that assembly. Traditional chain link fence gate hinges solve this with a male/female fork or a wrap-around collar that grips the round pipe and pivots on a pintle.

Waterson’s K51 gate hinge line is engineered the opposite way. Every mounting style (full surface with back plate, full surface screw-on, butt style between posts, and side mount) is designed to fasten to 2 in., 3 in. and 4 in. steel square posts or a flat plane. The clamping and screw geometry needs that flat, rigid bearing surface to transfer the closing torque. Drop that same hinge against a 4 in. round pipe and the back plate contacts on a single tangent line instead of a full face, so there is nothing to torque against.

Is The Chain Link Hinge Gap Too Wide For A Self Closing Barrel?

Chain link gates are built with a deliberately large standoff between the gate upright and the post. That gap exists so the fork hinge collars can wrap the pipe and the leaf can swing a full 180 degrees. A self closing barrel hinge cannot span that distance, because the closing mechanism only works inside a controlled gap window.

Weight is the third mismatch, and it cuts both ways. • The fastening loads are built for solid stock. A 1-3/8 in. chain link tube wall is thin, so surface screws or clamp pressure sized for a metal gate will deform or crush the tube instead of holding.
• The leaf geometry does not match. A chain link frame gives you a round pipe stile, not the square edge and flat face the hinge leaf is cut to sit against.
