- Paint that seizes the hold-open detent can stop it from releasing cleanly, so the door will not self-close and latch, which are the features NFPA 80 requires of a fire door assembly.
If your finisher still wants to paint stainless steel door hinges to match the frames, you can do that. Several customers have painted ours and reported no meaningful change in function. Can You Weld These Hinges Onto a Crittall-Style Steel Frame?

Weld-on removes the fastener holes entirely, which is the whole point on a minimal-frame, true-divided-lite door, and it bonds the hinge into the assembly far more rigidly than screws can hold on a 250 lb leaf.
