How to Choose All Glass Door Hinges for Self Closing and Hold Open on Aluminum Framing

“I need 36×96 all-glass doors attached to aluminum framing. Self closing with hold open on 2 doors. Black finish.”

An all-glass door has no top rail for an overhead closer and no reason to cut the slab for a floor spring, so the self closing has to live inside the hinge. That is exactly what all glass door hinges are built to do, but only if you match the hinge to what the glass is clamped to.

What Is the Hinge Side of the Door Actually Attached To?

Most mis-orders on frameless glass openings start here. “All-glass door” describes the door leaf. It says nothing about the jamb, and the jamb is what determines the hinge body. Waterson builds three glass closer hinges, and each one is defined by what the second leaf mounts to:

When the customer says “attached to aluminum framing,” the hinge side is almost always the aluminum jamb, and that makes it a glass to frame opening: the K51GM. Confirm which one you have with the glazier before you quote.

Is Your Glass Thickness Inside the Self Closing Range?

Waterson glass hinges run in two modes, and glass thickness picks the mode for you. From 5/16″ to 9/16″ (8 mm to 13.52 mm), the hinge self closes and soft closes. From 9/16″ to 27/32″ (up to 21.52 mm), it works as a heavy duty hinge but does not self close.

This matters on tall doors, because designers often bump glass to 5/8″ or 3/4″ when a leaf reaches 8 feet, purely for stiffness and feel. Do that here and the self closing requirement in the customer’s first sentence is gone. If the spec says self closing, the glass needs to stay at 1/2″ or thinner. Settle this with the glazing contractor at submittal, not at installation.

Does a 96″ Door Fit the Published Size Chart?

Height, not weight, is what decides this opening. Both the K51GG and K51GWL charts stop at doors under 7′-0. The K51GM is the only Waterson glass hinge published up to 8′-0 x 4′-0, using 4 hinges per door. A 36″ x 96″ leaf in 1/2″ tempered glass weighs roughly 156 lbs, well inside the K51GM rating.

How Do You Get Hold Open on Only Two Doors?

The request calls for hold open on 2 doors, which implies the other doors should close every time. Waterson handles this with two model families that look the same on the opening but behave differently:

Because both families share the same body, finish, and hinge count at this door size, the two hold open doors will match the rest of the run visually. A door stop function is also available at 90° (the configuration sheet also lists 120°) and can be added at the quote stage.
