Removable pin hinges are a popular choice for many doors due to their convenience and functionality. However, they are not without their problems. The convenience of removable pin hinges can be overshadowed by recurring issues such as looseness and squeaking. If ignored, these problems can lead to significant operational challenges and costly repairs to maintain normal door function.

Typical Challenges with Removable Pin Hinges

Loose and squeaky hinges are common problems that can hinder door functionality. These issues may arise from inherent flaws in the hinge design, such as inadequate material strength (e.g., flimsy metal, plastic), poor weight distribution (e.g., uneven load bearing), or difficulty in cleaning (e.g., narrow crevices, complex antique design). Additionally, hinges may not be designed to withstand heavy loads or frequent use, leading to premature wear and tear. If left unaddressed, these issues can lead to further damage and impair door operation.

Maintenance Tips for Longevity

Many suggestions and most used methods to solve the issues include:

  • Constant Adjustment: Regularly adjust the hinges to maintain optimal performance.
  • Regular Maintenance:
    • Check for Wear and Tear: Periodically inspect the hinges for signs of wear, rust, or damage.
    • Tighten Screws: Regularly check and tighten any loose screws.
  • Cleaning: Remove dirt and debris to prevent friction or damage.
  • Lubrication: Apply lubricating oil to the hinges every few months to keep them operating smoothly.
  • Avoiding Overload: Ensure the hinges are not bearing more weight than they are designed to support.

However, these methods can be time-consuming and costly. What if we can “proactively” prevent all these steps with the most efficient door hinges?

Q: How to tell if hinge pin is removable

To check if a hinge pin is removable, you can look at the knuckle. If you don’t see a hole with a set screw, the pin can be removed.

Q: How to install Waterson non removable pin hinges

Waterson hinges are very easy to install. You simply need the following three items:

  • 3mm and 5mm hex wrenches (included)
  • Spreader bar (included with double spring (DS) hinge)
  • Philips screwdriver

Since Waterson regularly offers a set of 3 hinges, We recommend that you install them based on the stickers affixed to each individual hinge (top, middle, and bottom). When installing the hinges, trace around the hinge, cut the mortise, and ensure the hinge pin is flush with the edge of the door frame.

Step 1: Identify the cap type. Threaded or push-in.
Step 2: Use the Right Tool:

  • Threaded: Unscrew with pliers or an allen wrench.
  • Push-in: Pry off with a flathead screwdriver.
